Ty Hobson-Powell graduated from high school at 13 and attended Howard University. He earned his bachelor’s degree at 15 from the University of Baltimore, pledged the Durham Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. at 16, and received his master’s at 17. He has since carried a message of discipline, civic purpose, and possibility to campuses, community centers, and public forums.

His career spans public health, elections, youth leadership, and grassroots organizing. As Civic Engagement Coordinator at the University of the District of Columbia, he built initiatives promoting electoral participation and public leadership. At the Marion Barry Youth Leadership Institute, he advanced leadership development that connected young Washingtonians to service. As Manager of the Mail-In Ballot Processing Division at the DC Board of Elections, he directed the District’s mail-in ballot process and launched its inaugural non-citizen mail-in voting program. As Outreach and Wellness Officer for DC Medicaid, he strengthened public trust through culturally competent community engagement.

His most important job is fatherhood. He is a proud girl dad to Giselle and Hazel. That responsibility sets the urgency of his work. His commitment to justice is not abstract. It is personal, generational, and grounded in love. Fatherhood deepened his belief that safety, dignity, bodily autonomy, public health, democracy, and opportunity are not separate issues. They are the same fight for communities where every child grows up free, protected, and fully seen.

That conviction runs through his work in reproductive justice. As a Men4Choice Fellow and Planned Parenthood collaborator, he is helping pave the way for men to stand up for bodily autonomy and gender justice. He understands reproductive justice as a human rights issue, a family issue, a racial justice issue, and a democracy issue.

Ty serves as Director of Campaigns for the Fair Budget Coalition, where he helps lead the fight for a DC that reflects the dignity and survival of working people.
